Belonging

Isn't it funny how sometimes you feel alone even when you are surrounded by people who you know love you and support you? I am often haunted by a sense of not belonging, of being an afterthought, of existing only when people see me. I have no idea where this feeling comes from; I just know that it is there. More often than I would like it to be.

When I try to figure out what causes it, well, I can't. Perhaps it is a leftover evolutionary thing that my ancestors gifted to me through my genes. What chromosome causes a longing for a different kind of belonging? Some geneticist out there should get to work figuring it out.

This is not a plea for help or a call for a come to Jesus. I am very happy in my life and my relationship with the Divine is stellar, thank you very much. It is merely an observation and an attempt to accept that achey part of me. Maybe if I accept it, it won't be as sharp when I feel it.
